We have been blessed with the opportunity to work with Genjo TFRK! Here is our interview with them where we got to know them better!
Tell us about yourself! What should people know about you?
I am originally from Norfolk, VA, but I’m moved around a bit. I started writing raps when I was seven years old to impress my dad and his friends. In addition to writing raps, I have competed in poetry slam competitions, and dabbled in other mediums of writing. I am a writer before anything else, and most of my work centers around spirituality and existentialism in relation to the human experience.
How long have you been making music and what or who inspired you to do so?
I officially started recording when I was nineteen. My first solo release was a song called “Ze Language” that I released on SoundCloud. I was inspired to write as a kid by artists like Eminem, Andre 3000, and Nas. As I grew, my tastes went from Kanye and Wayne to Lupe Fiasco. I felt myself wanting to write from a place more genuine to me and my interests and an artist like Lupe helped navigate that journey early on.
We are aware not everyone makes music the same. What is your creative process like?
My process varies from song to song. Usually, I find a beat, and that beat will tell me what to do. However, in the past, I have started some songs acapella. For instance, the first verse on my song “Ze Language”, which I released on SoundCloud, was written prior to the beat being made. Sometimes I toil through beats on YouTube, other times producers may send beats, it all depends.
Is there any advice you would give to upcoming artists?
Do everything you can. Take opportunities and risks, while never being afraid to fail or falter. Try things out, even if it’s in the privacy of your home, practice with your art. More than anything, be humble and grateful for every win you get, no matter how small.
Who would you say is the best artist of all time?
Musically speaking, I would say Michael Jackson, for obvious reasons. You don’t get crowned the King of Pop just because. What he did with his voice and his dancing, on top of just the sheer lore of him as a mysterious caricature, cements his artistry in an almost indisputable manor in my mind. If we’re talking fine arts, though, I’ll have to go with Van Gogh (pun intended). The Starry Night is just a classic, beautiful painting, and you’ll always find it on a pair of socks somewhere.
