We have been blessed with the opportunity to work with Nela Marie! Here is our interview with them where we got to know them better!
Tell us about yourself! What should people know about you?
My name is Nela Marie and I’m from the Bay Area, Oakland, California. I’m a singer, rapper, and songwriter. I've been around music and being on the stage my whole life whether it was through dance, musical theater, or singing. Nela Marie comes from the name Anela and Marie is one of my middle names (I have two).
How long have you been making music and what or who inspired you to do so?
I’ve been writing music since 2020. However, I started off doing project management work behind the scenes for other artists. I just recently put out my first single August 9th of this year called 'Natural'. I would say my parents inspired me from watching them strive for everything they want in life and pushing me to do the same. I would have say I inspired myself as well. I know that I have a unique style and relatable music. It was just time to show it to the world.
We are aware not everyone makes music the same. What is your creative process like?
Typically I’ll hear a beat and I’ll start playing around with different runs. I might hear a beat and the hook will automatically come to me. Then I’ll build the song around that. Certain lines might pop up in my head and I’ll go off of that or I’ll write it my notes to be picked up when a spark hits. My favorite is when I get a beat and I can start a song with the topic of the beat title.
Is there any advice you would give to upcoming artists?
Be yourself and don’t let anyone on the outside looking in on your journey alter that. Stay true to your style. Don’t switch it up because you think it’s not working or it's not what people want. Put out music for you. Whoever likes it will listen to it. Stay consistent with dropping music.
Who would you say is the best artist of all time?
I would have to say that Lauryn Hill is the best artist of all time. She has an angelic voice that can be soft or powerful depending on how she wants to use it. Also, she is one of the best poetic MC’s there is. I will say she is one of the artists that made my style what it is today.
