Meet SEPH Tyrell

We have been blessed with the opportunity to work with SEPH Tyrell! Here is our interview with them where we got to know them better!

Tell us about yourself! What should people know about you?

My name Is SEPH Tyrell, and I am a music artist whose goal is to be comfortable being authentically myself. I'm also a gay artist. This is important because I feel it's so rare to see an out and proud black LGBT Male artist on the music scene. When I go to a lot of music and industry events, I'm often the only gay male there, and I'm often discriminated against, or left out of the conversation. I'm willing to deal with all of these setbacks and continue to fight through the hardships. My dream Is to open doors and make it easier for there to be more of us. I want future gay artists to not have to deal with the same struggles I have to deal with, in order for us to feel free to be ourselves and succeed in such a judgmental industry without feeling the need to hide such a huge part of our identities for other people's comfort.

How long have you been making music and what or who inspired you to do so?

I began making music around the age of sixteen. Growing up I struggled with being able to express my emotions, so I was holding so much inside at all times. I was a kid that was hurting, bad. But I discovered that I could truly be bold and vulnerable without fear or shame through my music. Ever since I've always found that nothing will ever help me cope with myself and the ways that I feel on the day to day, other than when I write music.

We are aware not everyone makes music the same. What is your creative process like?

When I make music, I love to go in blind. I don't ever pre-plan what I'm going to write about. I normally begin with freestyling to whatever beat I have and the words kind of automatically come to me. Then I go back through and revise it of course to make everything cohesive rhythmically. After writing the first part, I then re-listen to figure out who/what situation I just wrote about, and I then connect it to a situation I have gone through In my life. A lot of times I don't even realize I'm feeling a certain way about a situation, until I re-listen to the song afterwards.

Is there any advice you would give to upcoming artists?

Don't be afraid to be yourself. I recently discovered the main thing that was holding me back as an artist was that I was trying to be a character of what I thought I had to be as an artist, rather than just being my true and authentic self. I had to come to the realization that although I'm sharing my art with others, at the end of the day it’s MY art and I shouldn't ever feel pressured to do it for the acceptance of others. If You become famous or big based on being the way you feel like you have to be rather than being yourself, you'll never truly be happy, and once you inevitably decide to be yourself, you'll have to restart because people won't recognize the real you.

Who would you say is the best artist of all time?

Well this is a difficult question because I respect different artists for different reasons. But artistically I think Frank Ocean will always be in my top regards. He sings about the way he feels so freely with so much artistic free flowing energy. I have never listened to his music and felt as though he wasn't being truly authentic, or doing it for business reasons. That is a trait that I respect SO much in an artist. And that is the same attitude I want people to have towards my music as well. It's still a lesson I'm learning and getting comfortable with to this day.
